Types of Accordions

If you're just getting into playing accordion. One of the first questions you are asking yourself is whether you should go with the buttons or keys. Go based on watching what type of accordion they use in the music you like. If you see that in the music you like they use the button accordion a lot then maybe that's the right one for you. No matter which one you choose to play, there is not one better than the other. They both have their pros and cons. What we do know is that it is a very fun instrument to play and the music you can create is very intriguing. The accordion utilizes reeds that when you press a button or key it lets air pass through these reeds creating a sound or sounds. You can play a song using single buttons or you can use multiple buttons at the same time to create a chord just like in a guitar or piano. If you push or pull the bellow hard the sound will be more sharp and if you play soft it will be more subtle. If you vibrate your fingers on the treble board you will create a resonance in the sounds.

You may notice that some accordions have extra switches on top of the grille. These switches are used to change the sound of the accordion. Most commonly they can imitate the sound of a violin, clarinet, bassoon and bandon. Three switch and five switch accordions also have a master switch which opens all the reeds to be played together. The master in the 3 switch accordion only uses clarinet and violin. The sound on a 3 Switch accordion is vibrant and focused. The sound on the 5 Switch accordion has more body and bass due to the bandon and the bassoon. We are proud to be a Hohner accordion authorized dealer and be able to share this wonderful instrument with people all over the nation. Button Accordions

The button accordion also know as a Diatonic accordion meaning that the sound of the button changes if the bellow is being opened or closed. This can be compared to the harmonica where the sound changes if you inhale or exhale. Each row on the treble side of the accordion represents a major scale. The button accordion is the most common type of accordion and is used all around the world especially in folk music. One of the advantages of playing the button accordion is its size. It's a lot lighter and less bulky than a piano accordion. However piano accordions do come in smaller sizes too. The button accordion has a distinct sound and can be played differently than the piano accordion due to it's diatonic capabilities.

Piano Accordions

The piano accordion also known as a chromatic accordion meaning that it has every single note in order. Unlike the button accordion where the notes are mixed up and they are not in order. The piano accordion sounds the same when it is opened and closed. Meaning the inside reed is tuned the same as the outside reed.
