A Short History of Brass Instruments

Brass instruments are a part of the wind instrument family, but unlike woodwind instruments, they don’t use reeds. In fact, brass instruments aren’t defined by the material they are made out of, but rather from the way they produce sound. As such, you could have a brass instrument made out of wood, and a woodwind instrument made out of brass (like the saxophone which is usually made from brass and is a woodwind instrument!)

Brass instruments (albeit basic ones) were first created thousands of years ago, as far back as the neolithic age. However, they began to take their more familiar, modern form around the 1800s. To alter the pitch of notes on modern brass instruments, most use valves to change the length of tubing, thereby changing the note pitch. One notable exception to this rule is the trombone, which normally uses a slide to change between notes.

Here at Constellation Musical, we carry some of the best brass instrument brands in the world, including Bach, King and Jupiter. You’ll find a great selection of trumpets, trombones, horns and tubas. And not only do we also carry mouthpieces, additionally we offer a wide range of brass instrument accessories like valve oil to keep your instrument in top working condition.

Trumpets

The trumpet is an instrument that is used in a wide variety of music, from orchestral to jazz to pop. You’ll never run out of inspiration or ideas. If you’re looking for Bach trumpets for sale, check out our selection right here! These two options are great: silver plated Bach BTR411S Bb Trumpet and Bach’s 180S37 Stradivarius Bb Trumpet. If you prefer a different look, check out Jupiter’s lacquer JTR700A Standard Bb Trumpet.

Trombones

Trombones have a beautifully warm tone, slightly more mellow than a trumpet. You’ll often hear them in orchestras, brass bands and jazz bands. The trombone is an exciting instrument that can be the centerpiece of a composition. Check out Kalia Vandever’s work for some great examples. Among the trombones we offer, a great option is this silver plated Jupiter JTB700VS Valve Bb Trombone, one of various Jupiter trombones for sale in our store.

Alto & Tenor Horns

The horn is one of the most delicate sounding and expressive instruments within the brass family, maybe even the whole orchestra. Make sure to listen to the horn solo in Tchaikovsky's 5th symphony, which really captures the beauty of this instrument. Furthermore, the horn can sound great in other styles besides orchestral music. You can hear it in jazz and film scores too. If you’re looking for an alto horn for sale, we recommend checking out Jupiter’s silver plated JAH700S Student Eb Alto Horn.

Tubas

Tubas have the lowest pitch of all brass instruments, and consequently they are the largest too. They provide solid bass depth in orchestras, jazz bands and even sometimes pop music. If you’re browsing for a sousaphone for sale, look no further than the incredible King 2350WSB Satin Silver Plated Sousaphone in BBb, available right here at Constellation Musical.
